PAUL BONELLI, WOODCUTTER EXTRAORDINAIRE, will be the guest speaker on Wednesday, July 23, 2008. When asked about his work, Paul says, " If there is a common aspect to all my work, it is that it is all about stuff that interests me, everything from biology, to history, to religion, to popular culture. Much of my imagery is of common objects and situations, but with themes that go beyond mere representation. Above all, I try to make art that works on a purely visual level, so viewers can appreciate my work even if they don't know or understand the background. People usually classify my visual style as a cross between pop and expressionism, which fits in with my main influences being comic books, mid 20th century animation, Frans Masereel, and the German Expressionists. I work in the medium of woodcut because I enjoy the process and because some of its inherent qualities, such as simplicity of messages and availability to the masses, well suit my approach to art."

Paul earned an MFA in Printmaking in 1995 at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. The woodcut print has been his primary method of expression for the past 18 years. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in his home state of New Jersey, as well as other regions in the country and are included in several important print collections. In addition to his positions as an adjunct professor of Art at Kean University in Union, NJ, and as an adjunct instructor at Ocean County College, he has given demonstrations at colleges around the country, and at the Printmaking Council of NJ.

Be sure to come on July 23rd at 7:00 p.m. and enjoy Paul's special skills; they are impressive. And, of course, bring all your friends!
