SUMMARY:In the Gallery - September 2023
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception is September 10th from 1-4 PM\nThe September show will be on view from September 2 – September 25. See website for hours. \nStudio – Members Choice \nGallery 1 – Bonnie Brown – Thinking Outside the Box\nMy experience with artwork began when I was a child. I would spend hours with a pencil and sketchbook drawing whatever came to my mind. It may not be exactly what I am looking at\, instead it would be what comes to my mind.  I would draw cartoons\, fantasy landscapes\, and abstract works with geometric designs. \nAs time went on\, I created paintings\, used pastels\, ceramics\, and enjoyed exploring various types of art. As I entered adulthood\, I entered my work in galleries\, street fairs\, and areas where I can present what I have created. Before I moved to Island Heights\, I took my easel to the boardwalk and painted by the river. However\, when I moved to the town\, I joined OCAG and presented my work in the monthly shows. My first solo show was at the gallery\, and I am presenting my art at my second solo show this September. \nArt is what I have always loved\, and I am looking forward to others appreciating my creations. The paintings will display memories of places I traveled to\, landscapes\, cartoons\, nature\, all with an abstract or fantasy-like twist. Thank you for reading my story. \nGallery 2 – Bonnie Dorsey (Acrylic/Oil)\nMy art is mainly nature\, still life\, animal portraits but I have also done some abstract pieces. My medium\nis mainly acrylic. I have some oil\, watercolor\, pastel\, mixed media and pen and ink. I work from photographs that I have taken or ones that people give to me.\nI started painting when I was 13 (on a whim) and my first piece was an oil painting looking out the window at my great-grandmothers house. I took art in high school where my art teacher encouraged me to apply to art school. My mother did not think that was a wise choice\, so she pushed me to study architecture.  \n \nI applied to Pratt Institute where I was accepted. I transferred to a CUNY school to finish out my studies.\nI ended up being a high school English teacher but continued to practice art-mainly pen & ink drawings. I did not pick up a paintbrush again until I was around 40 years old where I took a painting class with Elizabeth Paseler at Lacey Township HS. This reignited that spark again. I haven’t stopped creating since.  \n  \nPop-Up Gallery – Debbie Heyck “Painted Shells”\nHello\, my name is Debi Heyck. I learned in high school that my craft was painting. A kind but strict high school art teacher required the class to turn in a painting every week. Fortunately\, after high school\, there were places in Trenton to work as a painter and decorator. My first job was at a lamp company applying washes of color and 3-dimensional designs to lamps. The next two jobs were at porcelain studios Bohem and Cybis. I attended Mercer Community College and earned an Associates degree in fine arts. The porcelain companies shut down. I had to move on and found a job at RCA Astro in East Windor. As an artist\, I found my niche in the satellite industry by doing epoxy\, tape and paint application to space-ready hardware. I also took classes in computer graphics and made paintings in my free time. My work has been shown at the Trenton City Museum in the Ellarslie Mansion\, the Trenton’s Art All Night exhibit\, the Jackson Libary and juried shows at the Artist Guild.\nI got married and moved to Ocean County. In the next years\, I spent a lot of days taking my toddler to the ocean and we were always looking for treasures to wash up on the beach\, including shells\, sea glass and drift wood. I loved the patterns and forms of the shells. When my shell collection grew big enough\, I learned to enhance them with my own style of craft. I enjoyed decoupage\, pouring clear resins and painting.\nI joined the Ocean County Artists Guild six years ago. The artisan fair was going to be held and I thought I of my shells and how people would enjoy buying something they could hold in their hand and decorate their house. I had so many ideas for making the shells tell a little story about the ocean or the sunshine or popular culture. I spent a lot of time looking everywhere for small objects that would be a good design. I still paint watercolors and mixed media and photo reduced some of them for the decoupage.\nSince ancient times\, people have been intrigued by the bounty of the ocean. Shells last forever. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I enjoyed making them.

SUMMARY:OCAG103 Drawing with Joseph Rogine
DESCRIPTION:The Guild is pleased to have Joe Rogine back on our class schedule after a long absence.\nThis is the first of two 7-week sessions (9/7\, 14\, 21\, 28\, 10/5\, 12\, 19) being offered to ages 12 and up! (teen & adult) \nThese classes are designed for both beginning to advanced students who want to sharpen their skills in drawing. I have taught students for over 25 years who have never picked up a pencil to draw to those who have been quite advanced. \nIt is an academic course\, (academic being defined as that which can be taught). Drawings are created from copying master drawings\, simple to complex still life objects and classical plaster casts. The student usually begins by copying a master drawing that is supplied to them. \nAll students start out using graphite pencils with grades of 2H HB 2B. The capabilities and limitations of drawing materials and drawing instruments are discussed at length along with their proper handling. Classes are essentially about learning how to see nature and the world as an artist sees it\, through the language and medium of drawing. \nThe student’s eye will gradually become trained and sensitive on how to compose a layout on the page\, assessing proportion\, elementary perspective\, gauge angles\, identify shapes\, access the degree of curvature of forms\, locate hidden movements and linear rhythms\, the structure and modeling of form and the study of light and shade. This opens a whole new world towards a visual literacy that was very common in school curricula 100 to 150 years ago. \nDepending on a students’ progress and particular interest repeat students are free to experiment with various drawing mediums like charcoal\, pastel pencil\, pen and ink etc.\, along with the drawing surfaces applicable to their chosen medium. Joe Rogine supply list 2023.  \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Katie in the office at 732-270-3111 or by at info@ocartistsguild.org.\nHere are some examples of what students have created under Joe’s instruction.\nClick on thumbnail to see a larger image.

SUMMARY:Exposure 2023 Evening Photography Awards Reception
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit on view September 30 to October 28\, 2023\nExposure 2023 Evening Photography Awards Reception\nSeptember 30\, 6:00-9:00 PM. \nFrom the OCAG Photo Group is the news that the annual photography exhibition\, Exposure 2023 will have its opening reception on Saturday evening\, September 30th from 6-9pm. We expect it to be a worthwhile outing with three of our galleries being full of work. The exhibition is juried with monetary prizes in 4 categories\, Portraits\, Still Life\, Landscape and Abstract\, and a prize for Best In Show. \nIra Wagner \n  \nThis year the Juror is Ira Wagner\, the Executive Director of the Montclair Art Museum\, Montclair\, NJ. A fine art photographer in his own right\, he began studying photography in 2008 after working on Wall Street for more than 25 years. With an interest in urban history and design\, he has focused on photographing the urban landscape. Prior to his responsibilities at the museum\, he taught photography at Monmouth University from 2013 to 2021. In 2018\, he received an individual NJSCA Artist Grant. His project\, Houseraising\, photographs of houses being raised on the Jersey Shore following Hurricane Sandy was featured in numerous publications including National Geographic and The New Republic and was released in a photo book published by Daylight Books in 2018. \n  \nPhoto: Dan Epstein \n  \nThe exhibit this year is chaired by Dan Epstein who has been a working photographer since 1976. Prior to coming to OCAG he was for several years a trustee at Studio Montclair\, Inc\, a national fine arts organization based in Montclair\, NJ\, where he continues to coordinate and moderate artist critique groups. Professionally\, he primarily photographs people and food; his work has appeared in advertising and countless national magazines. He has exhibited his personal work since 1988 and has had solo shows in New York City and New Jersey. \n  \n  \nPhoto: Robert Scott McKay \nCo-chairing the exhibit is Robert McKay\, who\, along with his wife and partner Elisabeth Koch-McKay\, owns and operates McKay Imaging Photography\, a photo studio in Red Bank\, New Jersey. Since they began some 29 years ago\, Robert has co-chaired art shows\, directed a film festival\, entered and juried many photography shows\, served on a curating committee\, and an advisory committee for arts organizations\, all in addition to hosting over 40 exhibits in their Red Bank studio space. As an artistic outlet for himself\, he enjoys photographing what he sees… with his iPhone. \nThe exhibition runs for the month of October\, until the 28th. I was lucky enough to get into a basic book making workshop featuring the outstanding Harry Bower from Island Heights. The workshop was great\, and I brought several ideas back to my classes and eventually making a pamphlet style book became a part of the fifth-grade curriculum. Forward ahead several years\, I had retired\, moved to Toms River and was a member the Guild. Harry Bower offered a nighttime class here in a variety of handmade book styles\, paste paper making and various bindings. I took that class with about ten others and a serious love of making art books was born into which I could incorporate my love of mixed media. I spent hours in my studio recreating ideas\, combing others and eventually built up a fun collection of original books. During Covid I started to do a lot of hand stitched projects\, and this led to the creation of some fabric books. It’s lovely to hold a piece of art in your hands\, turn the pages\, open the folds. Thank you\, Harry\, for your inspiration and thanks to Fran for being my mixed media buddy!”\n  \n \n  \nFran: “I have always been artistic and when I was in high school\, I realized I wanted to go to art school after graduation. I went to Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. There were many art classes\, and each teacher was a professional in their field. I learned a lot in 3 years. I went on to be a textile designer for the next 40 years. After retiring\, I joined the OCAG and took many classes there. I became interested in Mixed Media art and have been creating it ever since. I took a class with Harry Bower a few years ago and became interested in making books. Between mixed media projects I create different handmade books. I create handmade journals\, flag books\, and fun junk journals. For me it’s a great addiction and I can use all my “stuff” in the process.”
