SUMMARY:In the Galleries for December 2023-January 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery Opening for December will be on Saturday\, December 2nd to coordinate with the “Kris Kringle Kraft Fair” (hours 10 a – 4 PM).\nPlease plan to stop by and start your Christmas shopping and view the art of our members in all three galleries as well.  \n“Gilded”-Touch of Gold\n       As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the Ocean County Artist’s Guild\, we reflect back on its rich history in Island Heights.  It speaks of Golden memories shared by dedicated founders\, who paved the way for the Victorian Lady to be what it is today. A welcoming place where artists are encouraged\, inspired and supported in pursuing their artistic endeavors. The Artist’s Guild’s mission seeks to promote and cultivate the Arts in Ocean County and the surrounding communities!\n       Mark Twain once termed the phrase\, “gilded age” of society. It referred to the appearance of wealth despite the reality of the thinly veiled\, highly prevalent poverty of the times.  It suggested an age of much lavishness and excess\, especially within the world of fashion and lifestyles of the day.  Ordinary objects were often ornately decorated with thin layers of precious metals including gold\, in order to beautify them\, so that they appeared to be of more value. They became instant masterpieces. This process of covering something in thin layers of gold or gold leaf became known as “gilding!”\n       All throughout history\, artists have used gold leaf to decorate their pieces of art. Egyptian and Chinese cultures were some of the first artisans to be masters of gilding. They would gild anything from textiles and pottery to ornamental wood. The Romans gilded ceilings of palaces\, vaults\, even walls inside the homes of those who could afford it.  Gold was thought to be the color of the gods and for this reason it was often used to decorate tombs and pyramids. And the Greeks used it to decorate statues\, fancy borders on manuscripts\, sacred figures and soldiers. In their paintings it was used as a symbol of “excellence” in Christian Art.\n       The Art of gilding has survived since ancient times and is still relevant today. Modern artists continue to transform ordinary objects into brilliant works of art\, with skill and precision.  Many artists today mix a blend of gold leaf gilding with traditional paint techniques\, as gold adds a “pop” of detail and color.\n       The word “gilded” is also used to describe something as being covered or “bathed” in bright golden colored light\, in such expressive phrases like\, “as morning golds the skies\,” or “the gilded leaves of autumn.”\n       So\, for the months of December and January\, the OCAG Members will be showcasing their interpretations of “gilded” art in celebration of the Golden years of the Guild.  By doing so\, they hope to highlight the priceless value of turning the ordinary….into something extra-ordinary….just like our beautiful Victorian Lady\, the Ocean County Artist’s Guild! Happy 50th Golden Anniversary!!!

SUMMARY:OCAG Mural Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nFunds are made available by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and New Jersey Historical Commission and administered through the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission.  \n“The mural really is beautiful—the most beautiful thing about it is our membership and community worked on it together\,” said Guild President Kim Cesaretti. “It shows the diversity of our community. Art is inherently inclusive. Art is for everyone. We all come together to learn to live and grow. We grow art\, artists and art lovers in Ocean County.” \nAll the members of the Guild were asked to submit line drawings of local flora and fauna. The result is\, “We have a flower garden with some birds and bugs\, dragonflies\,” said Cesaretti. “It was a collaborative effort and then we took the drawings and composed the image digitally and colorized it and then projected it on mural fabric\,” she explained. Members were then invited back to paint the design and it was mounted on board and weatherproofed with varnish. To make the mural accessible to people with limited eyesight the text was raised in Braille. \n“We also hyped the [drawings’] outlines with black textured paint—a paste that you squeeze through a\n[pastry] piping bag. This allows visually impaired people to ‘see’ it\,” she said. The mural is installed in the front of the Guild’s restored 1880 Queen Anne Victorian located at 22 Chestnut Street in historic Island Heights. \nWhen thinking of the mural’s significance\, Cesaretti again made the analogy of a garden. “We have the perennial [members] who always come back and the annuals who come for a season. We consider ourselves the good soil and the soft place to land for our seeds of creativity to take root\, be nurtured and\ngrow and bloom.” \nThat’s another part of our garden—we serve people of all ages\, we’re intergenerational. And we are here no matter your age\, creed\, race or political affiliation—art is the great equalizer. We all come together at the Guild. Together we are better and part of something great. We’re just happy to be here for the community.”

SUMMARY:OCAG104 Drawing with Joseph Rogine
DESCRIPTION:REVISED DATES\n\nPer Diem payments will be accepted by instructor for individual class sessions ($20 members and $25 non-members) \nThe Guild is pleased to have Joe Rogine back on our class schedule after a long absence.\nThis is NOW 6-week session runs 11/2\, 9\, 16\, 30\, 12/7 and 14. (There is no class on 11/23) being offered to ages 12 and up! (teen & adult) \nThese classes are designed for both beginning to advanced students who want to sharpen their skills in drawing. I have taught students for over 25 years who have never picked up a pencil to draw to those who have been quite advanced. \nIt is an academic course\, (academic being defined as that which can be taught). Drawings are created from copying master drawings\, simple to complex still life objects and classical plaster casts. The student usually begins by copying a master drawing that is supplied to them. \nAll students start out using graphite pencils with grades of 2H HB 2B. The capabilities and limitations of drawing materials and drawing instruments are discussed at length along with their proper handling. Classes are essentially about learning how to see nature and the world as an artist sees it\, through the language and medium of drawing. \nThe student’s eye will gradually become trained and sensitive on how to compose a layout on the page\, assessing proportion\, elementary perspective\, gauge angles\, identify shapes\, access the degree of curvature of forms\, locate hidden movements and linear rhythms\, the structure and modeling of form and the study of light and shade. This opens a whole new world towards a visual literacy that was very common in school curricula 100 to 150 years ago. \nDepending on a students’ progress and particular interest repeat students are free to experiment with various drawing mediums like charcoal\, pastel pencil\, pen and ink etc.\, along with the drawing surfaces applicable to their chosen medium. Joe Rogine supply list 2023\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Joseph Rogine at 732-349-6859\, or by email at info@ocartistsguild.org. \nHere are some examples of what students have created under Joe’s instruction.\nClick on thumbnail to see a larger image.
