SUMMARY:FREE Sumi-e Painting Demo by Glenys Baulderstone
DESCRIPTION:The Ocean County Artists Guild will present a FREE demo\, “Sumi-e Painting with Glenys Baulderstone”\, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday\, May 3rd at the Ocean County Artists Guild\, 22 Chestnut Avenue\, Island Heights NJ 08732. \nBaulderstone\, artist\, and presenter\, will introduce the history and technique of Sumi-e\, the mystical Japanese art of painting images through simple and yet most skillful strokes of black Asian ink. \nAttendees will watch as she gracefully conjures images of beauty using the humble tools of a grinding stone\, ink\, brush\, and paper. The art requires spiritual reflection and discipline which she has spent years studying with a master sensei in Japan. \nThe program is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. To register click the RSVP below or call the OCAG office (Beatriz Marquez) at 732 270-3111. \nIf there is enough interest for learning more about this art form\, we will schedule a class with Glenys. \nfrom www.sumiesociety.org \nExample of Sumi-e Art\nThe Four Gentlemen refers to four subjects that most painting students learn first because they include all of the basic strokes. They also represent the four seasons:\n• Bamboo – Summer – symbol of endurance and flexibility\n• Chrysanthemum – Fall – symbol of strength and perseverance\n• Plum the first flower to break winter’s hold- Winter – symbol of the joy of renewal and the promise of life.\n• Orchid – Spring – symbol of the bright promise of beauty.
