Pysanky Egg Decorating

Date: March 13th, 2020

Time: 6:30 PM- 9:00 PM

Artist: Jennifer Santa Maria

Pysanky Egg Decorating

Celebrate the spring at the Guild with this unique opportunity to learn a skill that is traditionally passed down by the Matriarch of the family to their children in Ukraine. Pysanky, also known as Ukrainian eggs, is a folk tradition that is both art and prayer. The method is similar to batik - patterns are drawn on the egg with hot beeswax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied. By repeating this process with different colors of dye, a multi-colored pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal vibrant colors and designs. No prerequisite skills are required to learn this ancient art. Anyone can create an original pysanka.
This tutorial will cover the history and traditions surrounding Pysanky, how to make your own egg, and an independent practice session. The instructor will provide a variety of eggs, many hard-to-find traditional and non- traditional colored dyes, and tools. Please bring a container or old egg carton.  This class is for adults only.

Bio- The instructor, Jenny Santa Maria, has created many beautiful eggs with a more modern aesthetic. She explores and experiments with mathematical concepts and art nouveau imagery in her work. She enjoys the therapeutic and soulful process of creating intricate designs on eggs all year round and has participated in several egg art retreats around the country.
Jennifer is a high school art teacher in Tinton Falls and has taught pysanky at mentionable locations such as Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton NJ, The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors in Wappingers Falls NY, Brattleboro Art Museum (Vermont) and the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art.
