Opening Reception for “Hand-Maid Books” by Fran Van Ostrand & Tamara Woronczuk
Pop-Up Gallery, October 1st from 1:00-4:00 PM
Tamara: “Many years ago while I was still teaching in Cranbury, New Jersey, I attended the annual Art Educators of New Jersey Conference. I was lucky enough to get into a basic book making workshop featuring the outstanding Harry Bower from Island Heights. The workshop was great, and I brought several ideas back to my classes and eventually making a pamphlet style book became a part of the fifth-grade curriculum. Forward ahead several years, I had retired, moved to Toms River and was a member the Guild. Harry Bower offered a nighttime class here in a variety of handmade book styles, paste paper making and various bindings. I took that class with about ten others and a serious love of making art books was born into which I could incorporate my love of mixed media. I spent hours in my studio recreating ideas, combing others and eventually built up a fun collection of original books. During Covid I started to do a lot of hand stitched projects, and this led to the creation of some fabric books. It’s lovely to hold a piece of art in your hands, turn the pages, open the folds. Thank you, Harry, for your inspiration and thanks to Fran for being my mixed media buddy!”
Fran: “I have always been artistic and when I was in high school, I realized I wanted to go to art school after graduation. I went to Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. There were many art classes, and each teacher was a professional in their field. I learned a lot in 3 years. I went on to be a textile designer for the next 40 years. After retiring, I joined the OCAG and took many classes there. I became interested in Mixed Media art and have been creating it ever since. I took a class with Harry Bower a few years ago and became interested in making books. Between mixed media projects I create different handmade books. I create handmade journals, flag books, and fun junk journals. For me it’s a great addiction and I can use all my “stuff” in the process.”
