OCAG President Cagney Archdeacon
October President’s Letter
In this month’s President’s Letter, Cagney Archdeacon shares his vision for the year ahead, celebrating creativity in all forms, honoring the Guild’s legacy, and inspiring members to get involved as we continue to grow together as a vibrant artistic community.
Dear Members,
I’m incredibly excited about the year ahead—our new board, our members both returning and new, and the many opportunities before us. While preserving our beloved Victorian Lady remains a top priority, my focus as President centers on one core mission: fostering a welcoming environment for anyone who feels the need to create.
Whether you can only draw stick figures or paint masterful pieces with personal flair, you are welcome here. We are a diverse group of individuals, energized and committed to helping the Guild grow and nurturing creativity at every level.
Over the past year as Treasurer, I have had the privilege of witnessing the tremendous dedication of our volunteers. Their time and energy help make the Guild a warm, inspiring space for all—through gallery shows, workshops, classes, and community events. This community thrives because of people like you.
Looking ahead, we have exciting plans in the works, such as new workshops, classes, and fundraising events. But none of it happens without your support. Please consider volunteering, even just a few hours a month. When a SignUpGenius link goes out, jump in! It’s a great way to support our mission — and to connect with the amazing people who make this Guild so special. Personally, I’ve spent many hours volunteering at events and opening receptions, and I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know our wonderful members.
My goal is not to reinvent the Guild, but to build upon the tireless efforts of all those who have served before me.
We owe a great deal of thanks to our past presidents, whose leadership has shaped the Guild’s path. In each of my monthly letters, I will highlight the contributions of one past president, starting this month with Bill Pike (2024-2025).
Bill led the Guild through one of its most challenging years. Under his guidance, we made major strides toward embracing change and improving financial stability. He:
- Implemented accurate financial reporting
- Established a working budget with quarterly goals
- Updated our website
- Helped forge new partnerships (including Restore, Habitat for Humanity, the CLCL Foundation, OCC’s deaf community, and Reimagine Runnemede)
- Collaborated with Garden State Distillery
- Supported Youth Art Month by hanging student artwork from Toms River intermediate and high schools, in what became our most well-attended reception ever!
- Played a key role in the submission of a major Historic Preservation Grant
- Reengaged with existing partnerships like Paranormal Cares
Thanks to Bill — and the dedication of past board members and volunteers — the Guild was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
Finally, I have one sincere ask for every member: Don’t just attend a class, workshop or session—be engaged. Come to gallery openings. Join us at events. Attend member meetings. Share your ideas and your energy. Be an active part of this artistic family.
Let’s continue to grow together—supporting one another, celebrating creativity, and sharing all the Guild has to offer with our broader community.
With warmest regards and a bright outlook on the next year,
Cagney Archdeacon

Janet Frederiksen, OCAG Gallery Committee Chair
Member Spotlight: Janet Frederiksen, Painter with a Heart for Joy
Janet Frederiksen, OCAG Member and beloved Gallery Committee Chair, has rekindled her lifelong passion for art and now dedicates her time to creating, exhibiting, and uplifting fellow artists within the Guild. A self-taught artist, she draws inspiration from the natural world, especially animals and children, which she sees as sources of joy and a reflection of her connection to her Creator.

A Creative Life, Full Circle
From her first pencil sketches as a child, creativity has always been part of Janet’s journey. While she earned her degree in Early Childhood Education and built a life around teaching, family, and raising her two children, art continued to flow into her everyday world – whether through cake decorating, craft projects, or even teaching homeschool co-op classes.
When the COVID 19 pandemic shifted life’s rhythms, Janet embraced the pause as an opportunity to return to painting and drawing. In 2021, she joined the OCAG, a step she describes as “one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

A Passion Rekindled
At OCAG, Janet quickly became an integral part of the community. Every Thursday, she joins the Do Your Own Thing (DYOT) group to create and connect with fellow artists. Since January 2023, she has served as Gallery Committee Chairman, leading exhibitions, organizing receptions, and supporting the Guild’s vibrant calendar of shows. She has also served on the Board of Trustees and has coordinated exhibitions at local libraries, coffeehouses, distilleries, and community spaces across Ocean County.
For Janet, art is not only about self-expression, but also about giving back: “It brings me great joy, and that’s what I desire to do with my art, bring joy to others.”

A Guiding Presence at OCAG
In addition to her own work, Janet has become a cornerstone in ensuring that OCAG exhibitions run smoothly. She secures solo shows, coordinates monthly hangings, emcees receptions, and works alongside volunteers to make sure every artist feels supported. From Sailfest coordination to library liaisons, her leadership reflects her deep commitment to both art and community.
Now retired, Janet paints as often as possible and continues to grow her confidence as an artist while encouraging others to do the same. She sums it up beautifully: “My passion for art has come full circle, and I am immensely grateful for that.”

OCAG Media (OM) interviewed Janet (JF) for this article
OM: You describe your art as a source of joy. What subjects or themes most inspire you right now?
JF: These days my inspiration for most of my paintings comes from my surroundings! I love painting scenes around NJ, of places from my past, and areas close to home, such as the beach or Toms River, as well as children communing with nature. These represent happy moments in my life!
OM: As a mostly self-taught artist, what advice do you give to others who may feel hesitant about pursuing art?
JF:
- Don’t listen to the negative voices in your head that cause fear and doubt!
- Follow your passion because you won’t be able to ignore it, your creativity will come out in some form, so just do it! Don’t put it off and make good use of your time as it passes quickly!
- Enjoy the process and the journey! Don’t expect perfection or compare yourself to others! We all have unique gifts and talents that the world needs!
OM: What do you enjoy most about serving as Gallery Committee Chair?
JF: What I enjoy most about being Gallery Chairman is getting the opportunity to meet so many different artists and learn from them! I am just amazed at the incredible talent that is out there! Each style is unique, and I love encouraging and supporting other artists to keep creating!
OM: What does the Ocean County Artists Guild mean to you?
JF: It means more to me than I ever thought possible! It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and given me the confidence that I had been lacking for so many years. It opened up a world of new friends, new opportunities, and is a place where I can continue to grow as an artist. It is art “therapy” for my soul and spirit!

Featured Art at OCAG this October
Tattoo Art Meets Fine Art at OCAG
OCAG buzzed with creative energy on Sunday during the opening reception for October’s bold new exhibit celebrating Tattoo Art. The show features striking works by artists from local tattoo studios, including White Lotus Tattoos, Under My Skin Tattoo Studio, Funtown Tattoo, AP’s Pork Chop, Barbara Benko, and MonkeyBoy, each bringing their unique style and ink-inspired vision to canvas and sculpture.
Guests were captivated by the fusion of body art aesthetics and fine art techniques, as pieces ranged from hyper-realistic portraits to surreal and symbolic designs. The gallery’s historic Victorian rooms provided a stunning contrast to the modern edge of the artwork, creating a dynamic dialogue between tradition and rebellion.

Adding to the excitement, OCAG also showcased Jo Guscott’s vibrant acrylic paintings in our Pop Up gallery, her expressive color and movement perfectly complement the tattoo exhibition’s theme of individuality and self-expression.
The event drew a lively crowd of artists, collectors, and community members, all eager to explore this daring blend of artistry. The exhibit will remain on view throughout October —a must-see celebration of creativity, identity, and the art that lives beyond the skin.
