OCAG June Member Show – Celebrate Local Talent “Down the Shore”

Art lovers, mark your calendars!

OCAG invites you to the opening reception of our highly anticipated June Member Show on Sunday, June 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. This vibrant event is more than just a showcase—it’s a celebration of community, creativity, and the diverse talents nurtured right here at the Jersey Shore.

Tri-Beach by Lorraine S. Moore

Among the featured artists is Lorraine S. Moore, a longtime member of the Guild, whose journey is as inspiring as her art. A former advertising designer and Bell Telephone employee, Lorraine reignited her passion for painting after years dedicated to teaching, volunteering, and raising a family. Now active in both watercolor and acrylic painting, her work often highlights scenes of everyday beauty—like her beach-themed painting “Tri-Beach,” included in this year’s exhibit.

Artwork by Mary Jo Austin

Also exhibiting is Mary Jo Austin, an award-winning artist known for her ethereal seascapes and pastel works. After transitioning from a successful career in marketing and corporate training, Mary Jo embraced art as her second act. With exhibitions across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, her work adds a serene yet powerful voice to this year’s show. Visit Mary Jo’s stunning portfolio here: https://www.mjaustinart.com/about

Bill Pike, OCAG President, emphasizes how vital this event is for both the artists and the broader community. “The June Member Show is a celebration of artistic expression and local pride,” he said. “Our artists pour their hearts into their work, and sharing that with the public reminds us of the powerful role art plays in connecting people. It’s not just about seeing beautiful things—it’s about feeling part of something bigger.”

Each month, our Member Show offers OCAG’s artist members an opportunity to present their latest works, ranging from landscapes and seascapes to portraits and abstract compositions. This year’s lineup features an exciting mix of emerging artists and seasoned creatives, offering something to engage every eye and stir every heart. Visitors to the reception will enjoy refreshments, live music, and a chance to speak directly with the artists. All artwork on display is available for purchase, making this a perfect opportunity to support local talent and perhaps take home a unique piece of Ocean County culture.

Joanne Zezula

Brick Township Historical Society Honors Beloved Artist and Educator Joanne Zezula

On May 4 and 5, the Brick Township Historical Society hosted a deeply moving art show at the Havens Homestead Museum to honor the life and legacy of Joanne Zezula, longtime member and trustee of OCAG,  a founding member of the Historical Society, beloved educator, and respected local artist. Friends, former students, and community members gathered to celebrate her many contributions to Brick Township.

Zezula, who passed away on August 4, 2023, was more than just an artist—she was a history teacher at Brick Township High School for decades and a passionate community advocate. She was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame and served as chairperson of the Brick Township Education Association. Her influence was felt both in the classroom and throughout the township.

Visitors walked through the exhibit, remembering Joanne not just for her artistic talent, but for her generosity, leadership, and impact. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched through education, service, and art.

NEW OCAG Class Initiative by Carol Colvin

Hello Members!

Instead of setting up a still life like I normally would do, I’m going to lead my class in creating a mixed media artwork using the student’s own “failed watercolors.“

I can supply the fixative or gel medium, and acrylic paints for the final design. Students should bring their own paints, brushes and a new watercolor surface for this project. And of course, their previous watercolor paintings that they want to use. An idea, or reference material for
the final painting is essential, as this guides the composition.

The result of torn papers and subsequent layers of paint produce a stained glass effect that is very interesting.

My class is 8 weeks, but members can sign up for all , or part of the class. Next class starts June 4, 3:30 – 5:30.

Students who come for DYOT/ instruction are still welcome, as feedback helps everyone.
