Art, Heart, and Shoreline Spirit: Ocean County Artists Guild Hosts June Member Show Reception

OCAG welcomed visitors on Sunday for the much-anticipated opening reception of its June Member Show, “Down the Shore.”

More than an art exhibition, the June Member Show is a celebration of creativity and connection, highlighting the work of OCAG’s talented members. Guests wandered through galleries filled with seascapes, portraits, abstracts, and landscapes, each piece reflecting the distinct voice of its creator. The walls told stories not just of technique, but of life experience, second acts, and enduring passion.

Tri-Beach by Lorraine S. Moore

Among the standout participants is Lorraine S. Moore, a longtime OCAG member whose career journey spans advertising, telecommunications, and now, full-time artistry. After decades spent raising a family, volunteering, and teaching, Moore returned to painting with vigor—working in both watercolor and acrylic to capture scenes of everyday life. Her beach-themed piece “Tri-Beach,” on display this month, radiates the laid-back energy and beauty of the Jersey Shore.

Joining her is Mary Jo Austin, an award-winning artist celebrated for her dreamlike oil seascapes. Her delicate use of color and light offers viewers a moment of serenity—a balm for the modern world. With work exhibited throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, her contributions lend depth and tranquility to this year’s collection.

“The June Member Show is a celebration of artistic expression and local pride,” said Bill Pike, OCAG President. “Our artists pour their hearts into their work, and sharing that with the public reminds us of the powerful role art plays in connecting people. It’s not just about seeing beautiful things—it’s about feeling part of something bigger.”

Each monthly Member Show at OCAG provides a fresh glimpse into the evolving creativity of our members, and this June was no exception. The mix of emerging voices and veteran artists on display this month is a testament to the vibrancy of Ocean County’s art scene. The exhibit runs through the end of June.  For those looking to support local talent—and maybe take home a little piece of the Jersey Shore—this is a show not to be missed.

NEW OCAG Class Initiative by Carol Colvin

Hello Members!

Instead of setting up a still life like I normally would do, I’m going to lead my class in creating a mixed media artwork using the student’s own “failed watercolors.“

I can supply the fixative or gel medium, and acrylic paints for the final design. Students should bring their own paints, brushes and a new watercolor surface for this project. And of course, their previous watercolor paintings that they want to use. An idea, or reference material for
the final painting is essential, as this guides the composition.

The result of torn papers and subsequent layers of paint produce a stained glass effect that is very interesting.

My class is 8 weeks, but members can sign up for all , or part of the class. Next class starts June 4, 3:30 – 5:30.

Students who come for DYOT/ instruction are still welcome, as feedback helps everyone.
